Three approaches dominate application security testing: static analysis (SAST), dynamic testing (DAST) and manual penetration testing. They find different problems, and most teams need more than one.
SAST reads source code and flags risky patterns before the code runs. DAST tests the running application from outside and proves what is exploitable. Penetration testing is a human expert probing the application, usually once or twice a year.
SAST finds problems early but can be noisy and cannot see configuration. DAST sees the real deployed system but needs a running environment. Penetration tests are deep but infrequent and expensive.
Neither replaces the other. SAST finds coding issues early; DAST proves what is exploitable in the running application.
DAST gives continuous automated coverage between penetration tests, but a human tester is still best for complex business-logic flaws.
